Review

A bohemian street artist looks to his girlfriend for strength and stability in the Argentine romantic drama Plaza de almas (1997). Alejandro Gance stars as Marcelo, a talented painter who peddles his wares around the bustling downtown of cosmopolitan Buenos Aires. Marcelo’s home life is in shambles––his abandonment by his family has left him feeling isolated and unwanted. Desperate for human companionship, Marcelo decides to pour his energies into a relationship with a young woman (Vera Fogwill) who’s unsure if she’s willing to match the artist’s level of commitment. A hit with Argentine audiences and the country’s screen critics association, the film is bolstered considerably by the performance of Fogwill, whose lone flesh flash will have you voraciously tracking down her entire filmography.
