Review

Leon Isaac Kennedy stars as Martel "Too Sweet" Cordone in the late-era blaxploitation favorite Penitentiary (1979), written and directed by crackpot cinema legend Jamaa Fanaka (Soul Vengeance, Black Sister's Revenge). The movie's plot is set in motion when Martel is wrongly sent to prison for murder, where the warden (Chuck Mitchell, who played Porky in Porky's) immediately sizes him up as a natural for the big-house boxing program. The warden promises Martel an early parole if he'll duke it out with Jesse (Donovan Womack). In the meantime, all manner of kinky sex is going down in the joint's toilet stalls—some of it involving only men, some of it involving Hazel Spears and Gloria Delaney. It all leads to a climactic super-fight, which, in turn, led to two loopy, loony, not-to-be-missed sequels.
