With Pasaporte a la muerte (1988), filmmaker Ismael Rodriguez uses a true tale ripped straight from the headlines as fodder for a nail-biting suspense thriller. Desperate to find work in “the land of opportunity,” a group of Mexican workers pays to be shuttled across the border in an airtight cargo truck. But when a shootout in the desert causes the truck to be abandoned, the only source of air is a lone bullet hole in the vehicle’s floor. Rodriguez ratchets up the suspense as authorities race to locate the missing truck and save the survivors from certain peril. His film is a fairly cut-and-dry actioner, but the director does spice the proceedings with a bit of skin. Rosita Bouchot shows what life’s like in the old country by shimmying on stage wearing bunny ears--and not a lot else.
