Five years after directing his eerie cult thriller Miss Muerte (1965), Jesus Franco delivers a spine-chilling remake in Nightmares Come at Night (1970). The plot centers on an exotic dancer (Diana Lorys) who’s plagued by nightmares in which she takes up arms against her pursuers. Dreamlike in tone, Franco’s film paints a frightening picture of a psychologically unhinged vixen whose waking life begins to eerily mirror her sleeping one. Jazzed up with a moody Bruno Nicolai score and atmospheric diversions that feature bared flesh (and little bearing on the plot), Franco’s film is boosted by a cast that includes Colette Giacobine and Soledad Miranda, in addition to Lorys. All three beauties attempt to outstrip and out-style one another over the course of the film’s eighty minutes.
