It's finally here: Scream 5! At least, the trailer for Scream 5 is and while the killer has new young, sexy victims to stalk, the trailer has revealed some familiar faces. The gang - the ones who are alive anyway - is back!
David Arquette, Courteney Cox, and Neve Campbell are all back and ready to face off with their iconic masked killer, Ghostface. Throughout the franchise, his identity has changed, but his target is always the same: Sidney Prescott. It's no different in the new film! You can see the trailer here:
The Wes Craven classic was first released in 1996 as a parody of teen slasher movies that also adhered to the rules of teen slasher movies. That is what makes Scream so brilliant: it works on two levels and it is good at both.
Drew Barrymore, the movie's biggest star at the time, is murdered instantly in one of the most famous scary movie murders of all time (second, perhaps, only to the kill in Psycho which was the obvious influence here in which the movie's biggest star dies right away).
In fact, we can watch that iconic kill here. The Janet Leigh one, not the Drew one. It's not a spoiler if it is literally one of the most famous movie scenes of all time.
But back to all things Scream! Neve Campbell played the perfect Final Girl as the brunette and beautiful Sidney Prescott, a sweet virgin who is still dealing with her mom's death while she gets terrorized by a mysterious masked killer. She did not go nude in the movie - she couldn't! Those are the film rules for the innocent final girl. But she became a Wild Thing after this.
Courteney Cox was an interesting character in the films as a no-nonsense reporter named Gail Weathers who will do anything to get a juicy story. It's amazing that her character survived throughout the series and became such an important character.
I'm looking forward to Scream 5. Scream has been a fairly good franchise, even when veering more into actual slasher territory rather than continuing to parody slasher films. Scream has now become a slasher film to parody - just ask the Scary Movie gang! Carmen Electra made getting murdered look sexy when she ran from the masked killer in her virginal white lingerie. Carmen? Virginal? It's always fun to suspend disbelief for the movie!
