Alternately titled Death Game, the bleak sci-fi adventure Mortal Challenge (1996) unfolds in a futuristic Los Angeles where the city’s poor and affluent denizens are forcibly segregated. When a well-heeled businessman’s daughter is kidnapped and dragged from her fortified neighborhood into the destitute portion of the city, an LAPD detective (Timothy Bottoms) is dispatched to retrieve her. The case takes a bizarre and dangerous turn when Jack (Bottoms) is hauled off to a grisly coliseum, where wealthy patrons pay to watch the poor hunted for sport. Part action flick, part social commentary, Randy Cheveldave’s made-for-TV nail-biter is lifted by scantily clad supporting turns by Kristina Copeland, Peri Reynolds, and Korrine St. Onge. The three beauties are the only things that make this hellish near-future look like it’s worth living for.
