A strange mix-up causes an unqualified woman to procure a job as a singer on a glitzy luxury liner in the German comedy Mord an Bord (2002). Barabara Wussow stars as Burkharda Meier, a croaking canary who’s handed the tough task of entertaining guests on a floating nightclub. With a bit of help from the on-board pianist, Meier quickly learns how to charm the clientele, and it isn’t long before her vivaciousness effectively compensates for her lack of technical chops. Director Edzard Onneken eventually spins his high-seas tale into a murder mystery, but its appeal remains squarely in the lounge. Although Wussow never drops her top, co-star Astrid Posner picks up the slack as a passenger who can’t keep her shirt on.
