Fear comes from the depths, from deep within our psyches and our souls, beneath the layers of everyday perception, under the protective swaddling of accepted reality, down in the dank tunnels that run beneath quotidian existence. In the subtle and powerful Japanese creep show Marebito (2004), the source of all terror is a series of interlocking passageways that descend from the bottom of Tokyo’s main subway station. A freelance photographer obsessed with images of apprehension and grief ventures into this disturbing netherworld, which seems to be the transfer point between earth and Hades. The scare-mongering shutterbug brings a creature from the dark caverns up into the light of the surface. She seems at first like little more than a typical girl.
