Mad About You, the sitcom about a married couple living in New York (sound familiar?), debuted to a lukewarm reception in 1992, but after one solitary season, it started getting better and better ratings and subsequently became a perennial Emmy favorite basically every year until it was cancelled in 1999.Was it funny? Well, maybe to Paul Reiser, who not only starred on the show but also had a hand in its creation. (He even wrote and performed the theme music! Oh, how talented he is!) We know he had a hand in its creation because Helen Hunt played his wife. She was an unknown when the show started and we’re pretty sure ol’ Paul had a hand in that casting call! Regardless of motive, the show managed to launch Hunt’s career, largely because she was so dang good in it. Her ability as a subtle, sublime comedic actress didn’t exactly go unnoticed; she won four Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series Emmys for her performances… Not too shabby! It’s just too bad that the show was so formulaic (Paul has an issue with Helen, they fight, they make up…) and was consistently dragged down by Reiser’s neurotic lead character. Had the role been played a bit differently, it could have been quite the hilarious show. Instead, it made you giggle nervously. Of course, that’s exactly what its core audience wanted… Play to the crowd, right?Sadly, as is often the case, Hunt never quite flashed any Skin on the show, but thankfully, she was often seen in various bra-free getups that let her perky-yet-pendulous boobs do their little dance with gravity. If ever there were a reason to watch old repeats…Written by: Vance Moravian
