French director Luc Besson has had one of the strangest careers of any director, taking huge spans of time between films and weathering numerous controversies, both personal and professional. His last film was the poorly received and attended—in America, at least—Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, so it makes sense that he'd want to get back to his roots a bit with another down and dirty female assassin movie.
Anna finds model turned actress Sasha Luss stepping into the title role of a model turned government assassin. This isn't exactly new ground for Besson, whose big breakthrough crossover hit was La Femme Nikita, a film about a woman who is given a choice between going to prison and becoming a government assassin. 2014's Lucy also used Scarlett Johansson in a similar capacity as an ordinary woman who is given a drug that allows her to increase her brain capacity.
The film's got a pretty stellar ensemble surrounding Luss, with Cillian Murphy, Luke Evans, and my boo Helen Mirren all taking part in the action shenanigans. If nothing else, it'll be another great piece of action popcorn fun from a director who used to know how to crank out those kinds of movies on the regular.
