Compared to modern Aussie film classics like Walkabout (1970) and The Last Wave (1977), Colin Eggleston’s Long Weekend (1979) depicts a terrifying confrontation with the unforgiving outback. John Hargreaves and Briony Behets star as a quarrelling couple who decides to work out their marital squabbles on a camping trip. Between recklessly chopping down trees and thoughtlessly slaughtering kangaroos, the couple displays an odious indifference to Mother Nature. It’s a decision that comes back to bite them in the ass, however, when the outback begins seeking its own revenge. Eggleston’s eco-thriller represents a unique blend of hippie idealism and grindhouse gore, but it’s Behets who really keeps the plot cranking by frequently pausing to remove her garb.
