Biography

Brunette firecracker Liza Minnelli has not always been the befuddled butt of jokes about her fervent gay fandom. She's a bonerfide EGOT winner (as long as you count an honorary "Grammy Legend Award") who made "New York, New York" a hit way before old blue eyes had even thought about spreading the news. With a crackerjack showbiz lineage that includes wizard of awes Judy Garland for a mother and revered Hollywood director Vincente Minnelli for a pa, tripping and traipsing Liza had no sooner toddled past the diaper pail than she was being groomed for stardom of stage and screen. The childhood years of dance training produced a trim and cuddly bundle of sensual energy that immediately flourished on stage. Liza took home the Tony for "Best Leading Actress in a Musical" at just nineteen years old for her starring role in "Flora the Red." On the big screen, Liza had appeared in some of her mom's stuff as a kid, but really showed her stuff with a nice peek at her bubble butt (hidden behind some white panties) in Charlie Bubbles (1967). We got a full moon shot, however, in Tell Me That You Love Me, Junie Moon (1970). The nude scene actually angered some of the family of the dead in the Mass cemetery where he showed her ass, leading to a law that says you have to get a permit to film in a cemetery. Liza's flaunting mostly stopped just short of nudity though, such as the revealing anti-androgyny of her costuming in Cabaret (1972). While we never got to see bare bum from our old chum, her role in the Bob Fosse classic was so dang singing and dancing impressive it won her the Oscar for "Best Actress in a Motion Picture." Farewell mein lieber herr, I wish we said hello to your superior pair. While she performed in many concerts and recorded many albums, Liza's biggest hit was the titular song from New York, New York (1977) which she also wrote, however it has been covered so often most people think it came from Frank Sinatra. Liza was great as Dudley Moore's love interest in Arthur (1981) but Liza's personal romantic life wasn't so much of a hit. She was married four times, with divorce rationales as diverse as being accused of beating her husband to walking in on another in bed with a man. Still, as she's gotten older Liza has kept working, appearing as herself in Sex and the City 2 (2010), and in an episode of Smash, while most famously playing Buster's lover Lucille Austero on Arrested Development. Whether you are one of Liza's gay fans who love her for her musical hits and lifelong support of LGBTQ causes, or one of her straight fans who appreciate her Broadway toned body and provocative and eccentric personality, miss Minnelli will always have you coming back for more. That's all truth, no Liza.
