The year is 1719, the country is France, and Louis XIV is four years dead. Stepping into the vacuum are regent Philippe d'Orleans and his henchman, Dubois, a decadent and liberal priest. As revolution foments, the two exercise their free will over the local ladies, as well as attempting to secure the archbishopship for Philippe. A well-made period piece, Let Joy Reign Supreme (1974) nicely captures the mood and spirit of France prior to revolution. Along the way, check out the impenetrable forest on Christine Pascal.
