Review

Filmed in Bali, Indonesia, the 1935 short Legong: Dance of the Virgins (1935) is notable for being both the last silent movie filmed in Hollywood and the last film shot in two-strip Technicolor. With musical accompaniment but no dialogue, the film tells the story of a young Balinese woman named Poutou (Poetoe Aloes Goesti) who commits suicide by jumping off a cliff after her scheming half-sister (Saplak Njoman) plots to have her lover (Njong Njong Njoman) reject her. Legong also features some taboo-busting nudity from Saplak and Poetoe, both of whom walk around topless throughout the film. Lovely legongs, ladies!
