Land of the Giants

Ah, the 1960’s--an era that gave birth to some of the cheesiest sci-fi TV ever. While shows like Star Trek were resurrected through syndication and spin-offs, most programs weren’t so lucky. Take Land of the Giants, for instance, a strange hybrid of Lost in Space and Land of the Lost. The commercial spaceship Spindrift passes through a strange cloud en route between NYC and London (why would you need a spaceship for a transcontinental flight?). When they emerge from the cloud and crash-land on Earth, they find that things are not as they left it. The Earth is now under totalitarian control, and even worse, everyone is seventy feet tall! The crew and passengers of the Spindrift must avoid capture long enough to repair their ship and get back to their version of Earth. Land of the Giants got stepped on at the end of its second season in 1970, never to return. Most of the cast went into the cloud of obscurity and never came out, except for actress Deanna Lund, who played sexy jet setter Valerie Scott. Her ship may have crashed, but she had no problem briefly baring her booster rockets in the 1991 opus Roots of Evil
