Review

La Noche oscura (1989) manages the difficult task of being both a work of history, focusing on the sixteenth-century prophet San Juan de la Cruz, and a political allegory commenting on Fascist Spain. When de la Cruz, inspired by a vision from the Virgin Mary, attempts to make changes in his monk’s order, he is beset on all sides by those who oppose him. Never fear the centuries past brutality, though, as Julie Delpy’s perfect palmfulls will take your mind off all of the torture.
