Based on a classic sixteenth-century text published by Spanish clergyman Francisco Delicado, La Lozana andaluza (1976) brings to life a tale about life on the lower rungs in 1500s Rome. Lensed by Vicente Escrivá, the fiery screen adaptation proves unsparing about the hot-and-heavy details alluded to in the book. Whereas the anonymous, centuries-old text was picaresque in nature, Escrivá’s film chronicles vicious backstabbings and bedroom shenanigans with gleeful aplomb. Fedra Lorente and Maria Rosaria Omaggio appear as two of the major players in the intimate Italian-Spanish chamber drama, dropping their corsets to prove that, even during the Renaissance, humans had an evolved understanding of sexual gratification.
