La donna della domenica

La donna della domenica (1976)

Brief Nudity

Review

The French-Italian crime thriller La Donna della domenica (1976) stars ’70s sex symbol Jacqueline Bisset as Anna Carla Dosio, the prime suspect in the murder of a famous architect. As Commissioner Santamaria (played by consummate Italian leading man Marcello Mastroianni) investigates further, he stumbles into a shocking conspiracy. What’s really shocking, though, is Ms. Bisset jumping out of the bed fully nude and running across the room. We hate to see her leave, but we love to watch her go. This outstanding film is a compelling Italian mystery that has plenty of things to hold your attention when you're frankly not particularly interested in who did it or why. The murder victim is a lewd, leering, little prick of an architect who makes obscene gestures at women. The investigation brings us in contact with some of Turin's high society. The commission meets wealthy businessmen, a rich and bored woman, and many others in his adventure. It may surprise many with its lines and story that mixes an elaborate detective plot with light comedic elements. The dialogue is fast with an amusing play on words, particularly for Italian speakers. The bottom line for La donna della domenica is how behind high society's apparent stylishness and elegance there's rank hypocrisy and an inability to look any further than the way they conventionally live. Flesh fiends will see plenty of phallic symbols in this flick, but will not be graced with a ton of female nudity. Nonetheless, check it out if you're into murder mysteries and Giallo!
