La ciudad de los prodigios (1999)

Adapted from the Eduardo Mendoza novel of the same name, La Ciudad de los prodigios (1999) stars Olivier Martinez as Onofre Bouvila, a poverty-stricken youngster, living in late nineteenth-century Spain. The down on his luck dude travels to Barcelona on the eve of the Universal Exposition in hopes of finding fortune and excitement. Onofre shacks up in a hotel and quickly becomes overwhelmed by unemployment, disease, poverty and corruption. The only bright spot is his burning love affair with the hotel owner’s daughter, Delfina (Emma Suárez). Unable to find a job, and unable to pay his hotel debt, Onofre, by the suggestion of his new girlfriend, helps to produce and distribute anarchist-flavored pamphlets during the Exposition. As the couple’s relationship begins to swell, a violent encounter with the police reminds the idealistic dude of his poor past, causing him to revaluate his newly embraced politics, along with his relationship with Delfina. Onofre comes to the conclusion that to find fortune and success, he needs to ditch Delfina, leading to a tragic interaction.
