Before Taylor Hackford scored an Oscar nomination for directing the musical biopic Ray (2004), he co-produced the rock-n-roll biopic La Bamba (1987). Thanks to the writing and direction of Luis Valdez, this flick immortalizes Ritchie Valens (Lou Diamond Phillips), the forefather of Chicano rock who perished with fellow music pioneers Buddy Holly (Marshall Crenshaw) and J. P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson (Stephen Lee) when their plane went down in a snowstorm back in 1959. As such, the date is known as “The Day the Music Died.” Valens was only eighteen when he passed but at least he lived fast while on this planet. During his life, he interacted with his half brother (Esai Morales), mother (Rosanna DeSoto), musician Eddie Cochran (Brian Setzer), singer Jackie Wilson (Howard Huntsberry), radio personality Ted Quillin (Rick Dees), and record producer Bob Keane (Joe Pantoliano) who helped Valens top the pops before he bottomed out in the burning wreckage of his prop plane. But before the story comes to this end, we get to enjoy views of blonde Donna Ludwig (Danielle von Zernick) and raven-haired Rosie Morales (Elizabeth Peña). The latter actress pleases audiences when she flashes her flesh just six minutes into the movie! During an outdoor shower scene, the naked knockout offers a quick glimpse of her chihuahua puppies to give us a bone! In fact, the Criterion Collection released a special Blu-Ray edition of La Bamba in 2023. And every time Mr. Skin glances at Ms. Peña’s La Bambas, he releases something special too!
