A jewel thief’s bout of bad fortune has an unexpected silver lining in Maurizio Lucidi’s crackling Canadian thriller L’ Ultima chance (1975). After doing six months of hard time in a Montreal jail, Floyd (Fabio Testi) hooks up with an old accomplice (Eli Wallach) and plans an elaborate jewel heist. The robbery goes off without a hitch, but the two men are separated while making their escape, causing Floyd to take refuge in a fleabag motel. What seems like rotten luck is actually a godsend, however, when the motel’s owner reveals herself to be quite different from Norman Bates. The lonely proprietress (Ursula Andress) is so happy to have a guest that she makes herself available for shagging the crooked customer. Floyd’s criminal past proves to be an impediment, but he manages to get a quick boff in before the truth is revealed.
