Biography

Kasi Lemmons has made a name for herself both in front of and behind the camera. She landed a part directly out of high school in the made-for-TV drama 11th Victim (1979), then took a break to grow up before coming back as Marcy Potts in the TV movie Adam’s Apple (1986). Her first feature film was playing Perry in Spike Lee’s School Daze (1988), followed by her skinematic debut as Jackie in Vampire’s Kiss (1988), where she gets topless and busy with Nicolas Cage. Kasi popped up in primetime on various series, had a recurring role on a soap opera, then struck worldwide recognition for her portrayal of Special Agent Ardelia Mapp in the monster hit Silence of the Lambs (1991) with Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins. After playing Cookie in Robert Townsend’s The Five Heartbeats (1991), she switched to TV for a starring role as Alex Robbins in the series Under Cover in 1991. Fans of horror will recognize her as Bernadette Walsh in the original Candyman(1992) movie, and fans of action will remember her as Detective Marie Mitchell in the Van Damme flick Hard Target (1993). The diva also played Madonna in the movie Gridlock’d (1997), directed by Vondie Curtis-Hall and starring Tupac Shakur. That same year, she stepped behind the camera and penned the script for the award-winning film Eve’s Bayou (1997), then directed the film starring Samuel L. Jackson, Jurnee Smollett, and Meagan Good. A hard act to follow, Kasi managed to do it anyway, crafting a script for and directing the movie Black Nativity (2013), starring Forest Whitaker, Angela Bassett, and Jennifer Hudson. She also wrote and directed the film Harriet (2019), starring Cynthia Erivo, Janelle Monáe, and Leslie Odom Jr. Keeping her momentum going, she produced the mini-series Self-Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam C.J. Walker (2020), starring Octavia Spencer and Tiffany Haddish, and also directed two of the four episodes. When life gives you Lemmons, you say thank you.
