Shockwaves went through the cinephile community in 2022 when the esteemed publication Sight and Sound had a new title atop its every-decade list of the greatest films ever made. Belgian director Chantal Akerman’s arthouse movie Jeanne Dielman, 23, quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles (1975) was now the consensus choice among filmmies as the pinnacle of skinematic achievement. Critics must have been influenced by what the Village Voice declared in 2000 — that this was the 19th greatest film of the 20th century. Maybe that’s due to the grant-financed flick’s inclusion of boobs! Lebanese-born French actress Delphine Seyrig gives a mamorable performance as the titular widow. This is especially true when she removes her top to expose her cleavage via a white satin camisole. To make ends meet for her and her teenaged son (Jan Decorte), Jeanne must make the most of her natural assets. In other words, she has sex with several clients who pay her enough to eke out a meager existence. Over the course of the film’s three hour-plus runtime, we follow Jeanne going about her routine until we notice small cracks beginning to form, leading to an explosive and unexpected climax! If you’re not in this drama for the artistic value, you don’t have to wait long to see the leading lady bare her breasts in the bath just six minutes in! We recommend sticking around for the rest of the story, but understand if you’re wrestling with yourself as you question whether this is a master- or masturbate-piece.
