Hypocrites (1915)

Give your Johnson the silent treatment with Lois Weber's lost classic Hypocrites (1915). Largely forgotten today, this scathing indictment of moral hypocrisy stars Courtenay Foote in a dual role both as a monk who despairs over the hypocrisy of the world and a minister who is stoned to death by his own congregation for daring to unveil a statue of "The Naked Truth".In a classic example of "missing the point", Hypocrites was soundly condemned upon its release. It caused riots in New York and was banned in Ohio. The reason? The nude form of the anonymous actress playing the part of Truth. Since identified as Margaret Edwards, this silent siren appears completely naked on screen, baring boobs, butt and even vintage vadge as she dances around the gates of a church. Talk about ahead of its time- it would be decades before a woman's lap wool was seen on screen again.
