Review

Scamps and rascals, particularly of Irish coinage, are inherently silver-tongued characters brimming over with charm and pathos. A heartwarming blarney, as it emanates from the Emerald Isle, is at the heart of the glad dilemmas that propel Hear My Song (1991) directly into that chamber of the viewer's heart where sentimentality has shacked up with jollity. An expatriate scallywag from the bogs is scratching out a living in Liverpool, England, by putting on crummy variety shows at a local pub, using increasingly desperate and misleading come-ons to draw an increasingly disappointed audience. Finally, he crosses the line into full ignominy. To win back the heart of his Hibernian lassie, Paddy must venture home to the land of lace and whiskey and return with the real McDeal.
