Review

An epic story of murder and intrigue, Gorky Park (1983) is set in pre-perestroika Russia. The stunningly photographed action follows painfully bewildered Moscow homicide detective William Hurt as he unravels the mystery behind a heinous triple murder. Three cadavers are found in his city’s Gorky Park; the corpses have had their faces and fingertips removed. Screen great Lee Marvin is great onscreen as a double-dealing American, and blatantly Irish Brian Dennehy is classically cast as a New York City cop whose son was among the three murdered people. The real bright spot is fine-line fantasy fodder Joanna Pacula as a Moscow girl whose ice skates are found on the feet of one of the victims. At the 81 minute mark, Joanna Pacula is in bed and gets udderly naked right before William giver her the big sausage. It's a long scene, and viewers get to see tons of boobage in the process! Gorky Park, overall, is about a man versus the powers that be. The action may be a bit contrived and unconvincing, but the film evolves into a satisfying climax. According to most people who have also read the book, the film stick quite closely to the novel. Flesh fiends who are in the mood for a well-constructed police procedural could do much worse than Gorky Park. It's quite gloomy but it basically adds to the overall cold and oppressive atmosphere. Mr. Skin can give this one a ringing endorsement, even if there's a small part of us that wishes there was more nudity. Beggars can't be choosers!
