A newly divorced woman discovers that her meager job is insufficient to pay her debts in the harrowing German drama Ganz unten, ganz oben (1999). Marianne Sägebrecht stars as Elli, a bank cashier who works diligently to settle loans she and her husband took out when they were still happily married. Unfortunately Elli’s salary is not enough to meet her payments, and she ends up destitute and living on the streets. Elli’s situation is dire, but she does find a glimmer of sunshine in a collective of homeless women who pluckily look out for one another. The lovely Jule Böwe plays a female pal who, in one eye-opening scene, screws the riff-raff who wander by her encampment.
