Review

An angry young man and his rickshaw driver friend get sucked into the gritty Bengali underworld in the Indian arthouse flick Gandu (2011). Filmed in black and white, Gandu (Anubrata Basu), which is a nickname that is essentially the Indian version of a-hole, is a disaffected teen whose only outlet is rapping about his impoverished existence on the streets of Kolkata. He lives with his mom (Kamalika Banerjee), whose primary source of income is boning a rich dude (Silajit Majumder) all day, so Gandu tries not to be home a whole lot. He and his Bruce Lee-obsessed buddy Ricksha (Joyraj Bhattacharjee), so called because he drives a rickshaw, stalk the city streets searching for kicks, and even end up acknowledging they're in a movie after doing some Dhatura seeds. Truly a lost soul, nothing seems to get Gandu going until his first sexual experience ever, with the girl he calls The Angel (Rituparna Sen). But after inexplicably hitting the lotto, everything looks like it's going to turn around for the wannabe rapper just trying to find a reason to live. Bollywood flicks aren't usually gritty enough to show a dude going balls deep, but Gandu contains a scene of real sex! Yes, Rituparna gets down on her knees to charm Gandu's snake, an act of provocation that's practically unheard of in Indian cinema. She's wearing a loose top that lets her tits slip out of it a few times, and there's a look at her ass in the midst of all that action. We'd sure like to Gandu her! A real act of slob-knobbery in a movie? Rituparna Sen brought a serious can-do attitude to Gandu
