A house of terror is spine chilling, a planet of terror is downright blood curdling, but there isn't even a word to describe what we feel when we contemplate the fright-fest of a Galaxy of Terror (1981). One of Roger Corman's B movies he produced for New World Pictures, this one had all sorts of star power, just none of it in any role's that would have made a good movie. Bill Paxton was the set dresser before he hit it big as an actor, and James Cameron was the art director whose special effects led to him being offered Piranha II: The Spawning (1981). When a ship full of space explorers led by the manly man Cabren (Edward Albert) encounter a mysterious giant pyramid expecting to get some kind of psychedelic enlightenment trip à la 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), they are sorely disappointed to find that the only thing this pointy shape can do for them is to turn their worst nightmares into deadly reality. From tentacle monster attacks and being attacked by your own decapitated arm, all the way to an attack from a giant maggot, things go pretty poorly for our crew of space explorers. And by the time the dead crew members start reanimating into zombies, it doesn't look like there's going to be any respite from the fright. Speaking of scares, there's a young Robert Englund in this one, but that's not why you'll be glued to your screen. There's nothing laffy about Taafe O'Connell when her rump and rack are exposed as she fights off the advances of an amorous space slug. O'No! That might have been a Terror error, since that sexual cinema caused all sorts of controversy. Still, seeing that gal au naturale is definitely a scene worth checking out Galaxy of Terror for!
