Two weeks from today is the official 40th anniversary of the release of Francis Ford Coppola's challenging and masterful film Apocalypse Now, and the director-cum-wine producer is marking the occasion with a new cut of the film being released theatrically on August 15.

If you're lucky enough to live near an IMAX cinema, the film will have exclusive showings in the large screen format on Thursday August 15 and Sunday August 18. I've got my tickets for Sunday, as the chance to see this movie that came out when I was three months old on the big screen is one I just can't pass up.

Should you not be so fortunate as to live near one of the screens showing the film, fear not, as this new 182 minute cut of the film will be making its way to 4K Blu-ray at the end of the month. If it's playing within two hours of you, however, I would recommend biting the bullet and going to see it, this is sort of a once in a lifetime opportunity. I saw 2001: A Space Odyssey in IMAX last summer and it was an absolutely remarkable experience, even though it was likely my three hundredth viewing of the film.

Apocalypse Now: Final Cut will play theatrically on 8/15 and 8/18 before hitting all disc formats on August 27.
