Review

Scandinavia is good for more than just minimalist interior design and statuesque blondes (not that there's anything wrong with statuesque blondes), like this addictive thriller from frozen Denmark. Dogme 95 veteran Kristian Levering directs Fear me Not (2008), the tale of family man Mikael (Ulrich Thomsen), who, finding himself bored and listless during a hiatus from work, volunteers to test an experimental tranquilizer. Enjoying the clarity the drug gives him, he keeps taking it even after doctors discover some nasty side effects.

Fear Me Not argues that just below the surface of every good citizen there’s an animal waiting to escape, and Mikael’s is -like many animals- a very lusty one. As the drug takes hold of his mind, he develops a taste for younger women, trying to seduce his brother’s younger wife and bullying a teenage hitchhiker into taking her top off. The manimal inside Michael also has some unresolved issues with his wife Sigrid (Paprika Steen), whom he psychologically tortures as revenge for what he sees as her controlling ways.
