Review

Director Alberto Mariscal subverts the conventions of the western in his blood-soaked epic El Sabor de la venganza (1971). Instead of focusing on a lone gunman bent on avenging the death of his family, Mariscal follows a widow and son who turn vigilante following the slaughter of the woman’s husband. Protagonist Helena Rojo is as strong-willed and merciless as a Clint Eastwood or John Wayne in her quest to enact justice: When the bad guys treat her to a brutish strip down, Rojo bares her breasts and then gets busy knocking heads.
