Review

The Spanish slapstick side-splitter Dying of Laughter (1999) tells the story of yucksters Nino (Santiago Segura) and Bruno (El Gran Wyoming), who make it big as a comedy team. But there is a sour secret lurking just below the surface of their humorous hijinks; the two can’t stand the site of each other. Once, while traveling in a vaudeville troupe with a titillating team of topless dancers, the teasing twosome both fell for the lovely-lunged Laura (Carla Hidalgo). When shy straight man Nino scored with the stripper, the funny business was no joke to Bruno, who eventually disbanded their comical coupling at the height of their hilarity. Years later when the two meet for a TV reunion, still fuming from their fallout, Bruno and Nino draw pistols and shoot each other on stage. When the live studio audience realizes that their brutal bloodshed is for real, the splatter is no laughing matter.
