Directed by esteemed New German Cinema veteran Margarethe von Trotta, the made-for-TV drama Dunkle Tage (1999) explores the tragic fallout of a young husband’s death. Suzanne von Borsody delivers a bravura performance as Angela, a middle-class German wife and mother whose life is changed forever by her husband’s sudden demise. Unable to balance the demands of her job and family with her numbing grief, Angela turns to the bottle--a decision that causes her situation to unravel entirely. Among those affected are Angela’s teen children, especially the beautiful, ambitious Felicitas (Stefanie Stappenbeck). The barely legal beauty uses her dysfunctional situation as an excuse for sneaking boyfriends into the house and then boffing them to her little heart’s content.
