The Dream House

The Dream House (1993)

Brief Nudity

Review

Scandinavian audiences have a very different sense of humor than American audiences, but some things are universal when it comes to humor and American audiences can likely find a lot to love about the Swedish flick Drömkåken (1993). In the vein of films like The Money Pit and Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House, this film centers around an ambitious husband and father named Göran (Björn Skifs) who surprises his wife Tina (Suzanne Reuter) and their children by buying a house in suburbia. The only problem is that the house is in need of some major repairs and renovations, and when coupled with the fact that Göran isn't nearly as skilled in such matters as he likes to believe he is, the entire endeavor is already a recipe for disaster. This puts Göran and Tina's marriage instantly on the rocks and she takes the kids to go stay with her parents while Göran is left to figure out how to make the home livable. On top of all of that, there's also a gang of thieves who left a stash of dynamite in the once abandoned home's basement and must now attempt to sneak in and retrieve the dynamite to pull off their next big heist. You can imagine where it all goes from there! Another great thing about Scandinavian cinema is that they love their nudity, especially played for comedic effect, and we get that here when Göran accidentally knocks off the towel of his neighbor Karin (Gunnel Fred), revealing her boobs and bush! We think we know all three reasons why he bought this house now... location, location, location!
