It’s tough being an at-home mother, particularly when your husband is a socially ambitious New York professional who views you as an adjunct to his relentless career advancement. It’s not that a woman in such a false position wants to cheat, it’s just that her husband so wants her to be charming and winning that he almost shoves her into bed with the most prominent alpha male around just so he can be friends with the guy or at least have some connection to him. And by the way, as far as Diary of a Mad Housewife (1970) is concerned, this is all happening back at the end of the 1960s, when social, gender, and relationship confusion reigned supreme.
