Review

By now already considered a modern classic of German television, the psychological thriller Der Sandmann (1995) not only helped to re-launch the back then slightly stuttering career of acting legend Götz George but also served as a star-making vehicle for the at that time completely unknown Karoline Eichhorn, whose convincing (and bush-revealing) performance earned her a Golden Lion Award for Best Young Actress. It centers on ambitious investigative journalist Ina Littmann (Eichhorn), who gets assigned to gain information on murderer-turned-author Henry Kupfer (George) for a TV show called Eye to Eye. While doing so Ina discovers some traces that link the charismatic Kupfer to a series of recent murders in the redlight district of Berlin. Is the killer instinct of the seemingly socialized author actually still alive?
