Der Amerikanische Soldat (1970)

The American Soldier (1970) is another dark film from writer/director Rainer Werner Fassbinder, who can’t get enough of ugly Americans--in this case, Karl Scheydt as a German American Vietnam vet who’s traveling through Europe as a lowly hitman. He plays vigilante for some crooked cops, but things get ugly when one of them loans Karl his girlfriend for the night. The sap should’ve gotten a deposit for Elga Sorbas, who promptly falls in love with the moody murderer. She’s got a body worth killing for, too, as Karl finds out when the angry cops go after him. There’s also some typical Fassbinder kink, with one lovemaking scene spiced up with a female observer chatting away. And don’t miss those sexy playing cards at the start of the film.
