Although it’s less known than many of his earlier thrillers, Roman Polanski’s Death and the Maiden (1994) is a brutally effective, masterfully directed work of psychological tension. Sigourney Weaver stars as Paulina, a resident of an unnamed South American country who was subjected to torture during the reign of a fascistic regime. When a mysterious stranger (Ben Kingsley) pays a visit to Paulina and her husband (Stuart Wilson), she grows convinced that he’s one of her former captors, leaving her husband uncertain of whose story to buy. Weaver’s performances are always riveting, and her body is equally so. The statuesque beauty lets the tension ebb just twice by revealing some enthusiastically welcomed skin.
