Review

An unassuming Belgian journalist finds his life changed forever by the arrival of a mysterious piece of mail in the magical European drama De Komst van Joachim Stiller (1976). Based on a novel by Hubert Lampo, Harry Kümel’s rarely screened Dutch-Belgium co-production stars Hugo Metsers as Freek Groenevelt, a newspaperman who receives a letter postmarked twenty years before his birth. Unable to grasp the significance of the seemingly impossible arrival, Groenevelt sets out to solve the mystery of its sender––the titular Joachim Stiller (Peter Strynckx). Those less interested in metaphysical mysteries than northern European vixens will likewise find much to love here––costars Cox Habbema and Willeke van Ammelrooy tease viewers’ Cox with their jiggling jugs.
