Darling (1965) was the darling of the Academy Awards when it won three Oscars (of its five nominations) for Best Actress (Julie Christie), Original Screenplay (Frederic Raphael) and Costume Design (Julie Harris). Ironically, one of the best shots in this romantic drama occurs when Ms. Christie peels off her costume in front of the camera. Thanks to John Schlesinger (who makes a cameo as a theatre director), said stripping scene showcases Julie’s beautiful breasts and bare booty! Not to be confused with the American horror flick Darling (2015), this British pic centers around a fabulous fashion model named Diana Scott (Christie) who looks back on her life during an interview. It may not always be a pretty tale despite her pretty tail. The sexy starlet is stunning as a swinging ’60s gal determined to screw her way to the top. Even though she has a hubby (T.B. Bowen), Diana gets lucky with TV journalist Robert Gold (Dirk Bogarde) who ditches his family in favor of introducing her to rich and powerful people, from Lord Grant (Peter Bayliss) to Prince Cesare della Romita (José Luis de Vilallonga). Yet it’s cunning ad exec Miles Brand (Laurence Harvey) who lands Diana a role in a movie, and a roll in the sheets. There’s an abundance of social commentary crammed into this New Wave classic, but nothing that’s as satisfying as seeing Julie Christie’s skin. In other words, this is the film that earned her a place as one of the decade’s most wanted sex symbols!
