Extended families make for extended guffaws when extending the funny-family situation-comedy template, and the home life in Chili con carne (1999) stretches the structure to its laughable limits. Tawny, fire-eyed brunette Valentina Vargas takes the female lead in this frothy French farce as a Chilean immigrant whose housemates include three ex-boyfriends and one child from each, as well as her grandmother and a cross-dressing soccer referee. The mere idea of these disparate and desperate characters cohabiting is enough to raise a chuckle. Just wait until Valentina brings her straight-laced new boyfriend home to meet the crew!
