Review

Based on a wartime novel by Louis de Bernieres about what happens to the peaceful Greek island of Cephallonia when word arrives of invading Italian troops, Captain Corelli's Mandolin (2001) is better than the book--because the book doesn't show Penélope Cruz topless. Christian Bale plays a local fisherman who joins other volunteers for the Army. He ships out, leaving behind aging mother Irene Pappas and the girl he loves, played by Penélope. Benito's boys roll into Greece just after the men depart. The remaining leaders of the island tell the Italian stallions that Cephallonia will surrender, but only to a ranking German officer. One problem: Greek is all Greek to them. But one Italian soldier, Captain Antonio Corelli, played by Nicolas Cage, is fluent in the language. Nic falls in love with Penélope, who mistakenly believes Christian is dead. It's not long before she has to decide between the two men she loves. If you were Penélope's guy, wouldn't you come back from the dead too?
