Review

A seedy, action-packed crime thriller and an obvious homage to The French Connection (1971), Barcelona Connection (1988) follows a tough-nosed cop (Sergi Mateu) as he attempts to put a swift and violent end to police corruption. Assigned to a Spanish drug taskforce, Inspector Huertas (Mateu) successfully nabs a mafia boss who’s central to a local narcotics ring. But when the gangster is gunned down in police custody, Huertas grows determined to find out who’s wearing a badge and carrying water for the mob. Miguel Iglesias’s film features plenty of whizzing bullets and exploding cars, but the characters also take some time to enjoy life’s pleasures. Like Maribel Verdú, for example; the near-irresistible honey shows off her impressive chest during a quick catnap.
