Based on a book about the real-life scandal surrounding Australian wellness guru Belle Gibson, played here by Kaitlin Dever, this Netflix series attributes the social media influencer’s schemes as rooted in competitiveness and jealousy towards a cancer patient named Milla (Alycia Debnam-Carey). Apparently, this is what drove Belle to not only claim that she also had cancer but that she was successfully treating it with homemade treatments and healthy recipes. This lie scored her over a million followers, a partnership with Apple, app and book deals, media appearances, magazine awards, and had multiple people following in her footsteps. But then things came crashing down around her when two journalists decided to do some digging and discovered she had not only committed charity fraud, but that her cancer diagnosis was a complete lie. Kaitlyn takes on Belle’s Aussie accent but doesn’t fully take off her clothes, though she does strip down to her bra and undies for a check-up that looks like it’s testing her Thetan levels (those soul-being thingees invented by L. Ron Hubbard). It still might be enough to get your own juices flowing, and we all know a little Me Time is really the best self-care remedy!
