Donald Sutherland plays a young director desperate to follow up his debut smash with another success. Ellen Burstyn plays his wife and, surprisingly, offers the only skin in this tripped-out relic of psychedelic cinema directed by Paul Mazursky. There are self-righteous jabs at hip, money-hungry producers and bizarre dream sequences that blow minds, including cameos by foreign hot stuff Jeanne Moreau and legendary arthouse helmer Federico Fellini. It makes one long for the anything-goes mentality of the groovy generation. Alex in Wonderland (1970) is a major trip down the rabbit hole.
