In case you couldn’t figure it out for yourself, this was a TV adaptation of the 1949 Katharine Hepburn/Spencer Tracy classic, directed by George Cukor. In the original film, the wife of the prosecutor defends a woman on trial for attempted murder, bringing about all sorts of marital annoyance. In the TV update, prosecutor Adam Bonner (Ken Howard) and his wife Amanda (Blythe Danner) find that their jobs cause conflict on multiple occasions, not just during a one-off case. Your typical left-thinking woman conflicts with right-thinking husband comedy, the show never made it out of it’s first season. Guest stars such as Dick Van Patten and Madeline Kahn didn’t hurt… but they didn’t help. To see Blythe Danner’s contribution to skindom, you’ll want to track down To Kill a Clown and Lovin’ Molly.
