Review

Every fresh generation of American youth adopts its own variation of a rebel tribal identity, and all of these counterculture movements deserve to be immortalized in the literature of the time, which is, of course, the direct-to-video movie. Hippies, punks, and preppies have all had their day on the shelves of Blockbuster, and now it’s time for ravers to bask in the glory of fleeting relevance. While it may be overstating the case to say that A Midsummer Night’s Rave (2002) is the Easy Rider (1969) of its generation, it is not going too far to say that the stoned-out, free-loving iconoclasts of Midsummer are more recently bathed and have a far greater grasp of the importance of good grooming essentials than do the smelly freaks of forty-five years ago.
