Director Mike Barker dusts off Oscar Wilde’s sly social satire Lady Windermere’s Fan (1892) for a new generation with A Good Woman (2004). The setting has moved from stuffy London, circa the late nineteenth century, to the invigorating Amalfi coast during the 1930s. This newly lush drawing room farce follows the devilish Mrs. Erlynne (Helen Hunt) as she attempts to blackmail her daughter’s wealthy husband (Mark Umbers). Confusing matters is the fact that the rogue Lord Darlington (Stephen Campbell Moore) is having trouble keeping his gloved paws off of Erlynne’s foxy offspring (Scarlett Johansson). The retro rom-com also includes Tom Wilkinson, Milena Vukotic, Diana Hardcastle, and a heaping helping of cleavage from Ms. Hunt and Ms. Johansson. Needless to say, we’d applaud the titillating sights if our hands weren’t already engaged elsewhere. As the bon mots and barbed witticisms fly, the blonde beauties do a noble job of strutting through ritzy locales in deliciously low-cut dresses. As a matter of fact, the movie includes an extremely fast but absolutely smashing look at ScarJo’s left nip when her breast practically falls out of her slinky gown as she crawls around on the floor. Alas, the pretty performer doesn’t let us see her piece in this popular period piece. A Good Woman follows various film adaptations, such as Lady Windermere’s Fan (1916, 1925, 1935), Story of a Bad Woman (1948), The Fan (1949), and 2 Women (1975). Obviously, Mr. Skin is hoping the next version of the Wilde play will have some wild nudity!
