A Freira e a Tortura (1983)

In the taboo Brazilian drama A Freira e a Tortura (1983), a police chief struggles with the correct course of action to take when a nun is accused of political crimes. The protagonist in Ozualdo Ribeiro Candeias’s drama is a happy-go-lucky public servant who’s never given a great deal of thought to the uglier aspects of his job. When he’s asked to torture a dissident nun (Vera Gimenez) to learn more about her transgressions, however, the officer is faced with a wrenching moral dilemma. The scenes in which Gimenez suffers rough handling at the hands of the police can be difficult to watch, but costar Claudia Alencar’s curves are enough to keep male viewers riveted to the screen.
